Both are advertised as "Alias" emails & caused me to setup my account incorrectly. There may be 6 with the "alias" ones, that do not allow sending emails from, but there IS only 5 with the additional addresses & one is the default address created. The problem was they titled both the additional email addresses & the alias ones as "Alias Email Addresses".
The problem, as they so addressed, was not with the 'alias' emails. All I can say is I hope this helps someone to avoid the mess I went through, & what others have if reading the reviews across multiple sites, &, again, practice some good CYA if you plan to try them!!! EDITED FOR PROTON'S REPLY: For weeks I waited for a response to the dispute through Paypal with Proton but now that I put it in the public's face I got a response here within a few hours, & after their hours.

And after my experience even that is FALSE ADVERTISING! I would have given them zero stars if I could have & after this lack of professionalism I will not even use their free account. I looked over everything in Proton's help & user sections & the only thing mentioned for refunds is with using a bank transfer otherwise it just says your account will be credited. If you do choose to try Proton be smart & practice some CYA & use Paypal or a CC company that will stand up for your rights.

Plus them stating one gets 5 is just FALSE ADVERTISING as one of the 5 is the default email you create. Proton does not give a good write up on how the additional & alias emails work. I wanted to get this info out so people are not expecting great or good service as I was. Unless the site you gave or used the alias email too emails you, sending mail from it is NOT possible! It or they are only to receive emails basically. Could that be why they offer the highest charged email service out there? The actual "alias" accounts one is given does not work like expected. Even with a free account one still gets limited use of their VPN & alias accounts because the paying members are funding it. That is supposed to be a "professional" business, yeah right! Also know, & can be found if one does enough research on Proton, that as a paying member you fund the rights for all the free users & in reviews Proton was happy to disclose that, & ONLY there.

Just made me wait the full time while the dispute carried on. Proton never even responded once to any discussions through Paypal. Thankfully Paypal found in my favor & refunded my money. It was just like they planned to keep my money even though I never got to use the service for more than disputing with CS. Nope I couldn't even access it to see if the funds were there & I could move them. I was locked out of my account, of which the help section states they will refund to THAT account (like if I am canceling it because of the poor service & false advertising I'd want to keep using their service). To their credit they did cancel the account but there was NO reply to any of my questions about refunding my money. After over a week of jumping through the BS replies, at one a day, from CS I had enough & told them to cancel my account & return my money. I thought if I stayed up I could get the issues resolved quicker.NOT! The only part in Proton's help section that talks about refunds is if you pay with a bank transaction! Thankfully I was smart enough to pay with Paypal. For myself in North America this started just after 1 am. After they respond with a basic BS reply to keep you jumping through the hoops, & I responded within minutes after receiving it, there will be NO others until the next day.their day. Even as a lowest paid plan subscriber I only got a response within 40 minutes of the start of their day in Switzerland & only one a day. I bought a paid account to learn almost everything is a scam! What they advertise as "alias" accounts are nothing more than additional email accounts AND the default account address IS considered one of the five! How can it be an "alias" or additional email address if it is the default one? Dealing with customer service was a joke & a nightmare! Their advertised 24/7 support is a joke.
BEWARE!!!!! Read LOTS of reviews on them!
